The Hollinger Golf Club is proud to annually participate in two Ryder Cup events against the Spruce Needles Golf Club designed to foster friendship and goodwill amongst the members of both clubs in a competitive atmosphere.
2017 Bob Barrette Memorial Ryder Cup
The 2017 edition of the Ryder Cup between Hollinger Golf Club and Spruce Needles began with a fish-fry on Friday evening at the Spruce after players completed their practice rounds. Before the names were selected for the opening FourBall matches, Owen Rigg and Marcus Richard announced the renaming of the event as the Bob Barrette Memorial Ryder Cup. Bob Barrette was a long-time member at Spruce Needles and a big support of interclub events between both courses.
The weather was hot and humid most of the weekend with the exception Saturday morning when the day started overcast and there was an hour or so of rain. The golf course was in excellent condition all weekend for the participants. Thank you to Spruce Needles for hosting great weekend of golf and friendly competition.
The competition began on Saturday morning with Spruce Needles opening up a large 5 to 1 lead after the Fourball Matches. Although the score was dominating, most of the matches were close throughout the morning with many matches going at least 16 holes. Here are the Fourball Match Results.
In the afternoon on Saturday, our Hollinger team needed a strong performance to have a chance on Sunday. This year, the format for the Foursome matches was changed to the traditional Foursome format. Previously, the event was a Modified Alternate Shot where both players hit tee shots and alternated from there. In the new format of true alternate shot, one player hits the tee shots on odd holes and his partner tees off on even holes.
Our team bounced back with a very good performance in the Foursomes format winning 4 of the 6 points available to shrink the lead to 2 points for Spruce Needles. Here are the Foursome Match Results.
On Sunday, the players representing the Hollinger Golf Club all knew they would need to play well if there was a chance to comeback and defend the Bob Barrette Memorial Ryder Cup. On an unusually hot and humid September day in Timmins, the team got off to a good start winning 3 of the first 4 matches to finish on Sunday. Needing at least 7 1/2 points to defend the trophy, this was the start and boost the team needed.
In the end, the team completed the comeback with a dominating 9 to 3 victory in the Individual Matches. The Hollinger Team won 8 of the 12 singles matches to help clinch the win with a final score 14 points to 10 points. Here are the results from Sunday’s matches: 2017 Bob Barrette Memorial Ryder Cup – Individual Match Results & Final Result.
The highlight of Sunday afternoon and the weekend, came from Joey Merenda on the 18th hole of his individual match against Marcus Richard. At the time, Joey was 1-Down to Marcus and with the events overall result uncertain, he holed his approach shot for an eagle 2 to win the hole and earn a 1/2 point for the team.
2016 Timmins Ryder Cup
The 2016 Ryder Cup was held at the Hollinger Golf Club on Saturday, September 24th and Sunday September 25th. Our Hollinger team defended the Cup on a perfect autumn weekend for the event with the golf course in arguably the best shape of the year. This year’s event was a great example of friendly competition as it was a close battle throughout the weekend.
After Saturday’s morning 6 Fourball matches, the teams were tied at 3 points each. In the afternoon’s Foursome matches (modified alternate shot), our team from Hollinger won 4 of the 6 matches to take a 2 point lead into Sunday’s Singles matches.
On Sunday, anything could have happened as a 2 point lead is not very big when there are 12 matches being played. As was the case all weekend, the singles matches were close but in the end our team won the singles session 6 1/2 points to 5 1/2 to defend the cup by 3 points overall.
2016 Senior Ryder Cup
On Tuesday, September 20th, Spruce Needles hosted the Senior Ryder Cup on a challenging day for golf as the wind was strong and gusty. of golf and camaraderie amongst some of the best senior golfers at both clubs. Our team was very excited to win back Cup after losing the matches on home turf the year before.
The team played very well to win this year’s event 11 points to 7 points. Although the competition on the course was fierce, the teams gathered together afterwards for dinner, a few drinks and some laughs.
